"0x000000F4" Stop error when you open a console application in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Vista [MS]

Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista, the Csrss.exe process crashes when you open a console application. Additionally, you may receive a Stop error message that resembles the following:

STOP 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, parameter 2, parameter 3, parameter 4)
CRITICAL_OBJECT_TERMINATION



Notes

  • The parameters in this Stop error message may vary, depending on the configuration of the computer. However, the first parameter is always 0x00000003.

  • Not all "0x000000F4" Stop errors are caused by this issue.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Csrss.exe process does not perform a NULL check before it accesses a variable.

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
