Format a shape in Visio
In Visio you can customize the appearance of shapes by changing their text colors, font, fill colors and patterns, line weight and style, or shadow.
Apply a color, gradient, and line style all at once
The quickest way to add color to a shape is with the menu of preset Shape Styles.

Select the shape you want to change.

On the toolbar, go to Home > Shape Styles:

Open the gallery of styles and select an option, all of which match your drawing's color theme. Options include different colors, gradients, and line styles.

Select the shape or shapes you want to change.

Right-click the shape and select Format Shape.
The Format Shape pane opens.

On the
(Fill & Line) tab, select the type of fill, then select a color.

If you want a border on the shape, under Line, select the line type and color. Then select any other options you want such as Transparency, Width, Dash type and Cap type.

To apply an effect (such as Shadow, Reflection, Glow, or 3D appearance, select the
(Effects) tab at the top of the pane, and explore the available options.
Choose a custom color to apply
You can apply a custom color by specifying a red-green-blue color combination or a hexadecimal color code, or by choosing from the color canvas.

Select one or more shapes.

Select Home > Fill

Select More Colors > Custom.

You can specify a red-green-blue color combination or a hex value for a custom color, or you can choose a color directly from the color map.

To select a custom outline color, select Home > Line
, then select More Colors.
Apply a color, line style, gradient, and effect independently

Select one or more shapes.

Select the Shape tab on the toolbar ribbon.

Select Shape > Shape Fill
, then select an option from the gallery that appears.
The
Shape Fill menu also has a Transparency option so that you can adjust the opacity of a shape to reveal text or another shape behind it.

If you want a border on the shape, select Shape Outline
, then select an option from the gallery that appears.
You can also change the line, weight, dashes, or arrows (if you have selected a connector line).
Choose a custom color to apply

Select one or more shapes.

To fill the shape with a theme or standard color, select Shape > Shape Fill
> More Fill Colors to define a custom color.

To apply a custom color to the shape's border, select Shape > Shape Outline
> More Outline Colors.

If you want to apply the same formatting to all shapes in your drawing, you may want to create and apply a custom theme. To learn more about themes, see Apply a theme to a shape.

Format text in a shape
You can change the font, character spacing, paragraph spacing and alignment, positioning of a text block, bullets or number, and tab stops of text in a shape.

Change the line of a shape
You can change the line color, line weight, dash type, and transparency of a shape's border.

In Visio 2010, you can change the fill color, the fill pattern, and even add your own fill patterns to a shape.

Apply a theme to your shapes
When you apply a theme in Visio 2010, you specify the formatting (font, text colors, fill colors, borders, and shadows) of every shape on the drawing page.
The built-in themes apply both color formatting (font color, fill color) and shape effects (border style, shadow) to shapes. You can choose to change only the effects (border, shadow, font, and connector styles) or only the colors (text, line, connector, fill, and shadow colors) of the shapes in your drawing.
