Embed an object into a project [MS]

You may find it helpful to embed an object into your Project plan. For example, you can embed a Word document that outlines your project's initiation phase, or you may embed an audio, video, or animation file.

When you embed an existing object into your plan, it becomes part of the Project file. Users who do not have access to the original object can open the Project plan to view the embedded object. Because an embedded object is a link to the source file, the object is updated if you change the source file. You can also create a new embedded object that is part of the Project plan, but does not have an existing source file. If you need to change the embedded object, you can make your changes by using Project instead of by using the program that you used to create the source file.

  1. Open a Project plan, and then click the area in which you want to embed an object.

    • In the Notes portion of the Task Information dialog box or Resource Information dialog box, choose Insert Object  .

    • In a task or resource view, choose Object on the Quick Access Toolbar.

Note: If you don't see the Object command on the Quick Access Toolbar, choose Customize the Quick Access Toolbar > More Commands. Then, in the Choose commands from list, choose All Commands, find Object in the list, and then choose Add.

  2. In the Insert Object dialog box, you can insert an object in two ways:

    • To insert a new object, select Create New, and then select the source file's object type in the Object Type list.

    • To insert an existing object, select Create from File. In the File box, type the path and file name of the object or choose Browse to locate and select the file.

Tip: To link the object to the source file, select the Link check box. Link the object to the source file if you are concerned about the size of the file.

  3. To display the object as an icon, select the Display As Icon check box.

  4. To change the default icon image or label of an object displayed as an icon, choose Change Icon.

    • To change the icon, select the icon in the list of icons associated with the program.

    • To use the icon that is displayed by default with the program that is associated with the icon, choose Default.

    • To display an icon that is not displayed in the list of icons, select From File, and then choose Browse to find and insert a different icon.

    • To change the icon's label, type a new label name in the Label box.

      • To delete an object, select it, and then press the DELETE key.

      • To change an embedded object, double-click the object to open, and then edit it in the source program. The source program (or another program capable of editing the object) must be installed on your computer.
